Bill heads the Barton Law Firm in Newport, Oregon. He tries landmark cases and he gets results. Barton is the first to successfully file, serve, and state a legal cause of action against the Vatican for sexual abuse of a minor. He successfully sued Ma Anand Sheela when the Rashneeshees took over the Eastern Oregon town of Antelope in 1985. Barton was the first to recover over $1,000,000 from the Boy Scouts of America for their failure to act against a
sexually abusive scoutmaster. In all, The Barton Firm has over 40 verdicts and
settlements of seven figures or more.
Barton is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, is listed in Outstanding Lawyers of America, The Best of the U.S. and the Best Lawyers in America in three categories. He’s been featured on the cover of Super Lawyers, is listed in Who's Who in the World, is a fellow of the International Society of Barristers and International Academy of Trial Lawyers.
Bill has been named the Owen M. Panner Oregon Trial Lawyers Distinguished Trial Lawyer and is a recipient of the Oregon State Bar’s Professionalism Award. Bill is Past President of the Western Trial Lawyers Association, the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association and the State Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. His book, Recovering for Psychological Injuries, 3rd Ed. (Trial Guides, 2010), is the most utilized books by trial lawyers and is regarded as one of the leading treatises on psychological injuries.
